  • Napoleon’s Restaurant Property Has New Owners (2011/12/31)
The somewhat distressed looking Napoleon’s Restaurant at 67 Waterloo St., in Old Town Warrenton’s historical district was foreclosed upon in December of 2010. Napoleon’s opened in 1978, and was sold to Al Nosrat in 2002. Four years later he sold it to Grand American LLC. When The Fauquier Bank foreclosed on Grand American, which it had loaned $ 1.6 million to buy the restaurant, it assumed $ 1.5 million in debt on the property. For around a year, the parking lot has been chained off, with “for sale” signs hanging from the chain. That chain is no longer there. Earlier this month, it was reported that the property has new owners . The original home on the site was built in 1838, and was home at one point to Eppa Hunton , a Civil War General, and 4 time Congress...
  • Community Saves New Year’s Celebration (2011/12/29)
Giving thanks, connecting with neighbors and new friends, celebrating the past and the future; these are all things that celebrations like a First Night bring to a community. Earlier this month, the stark realization hit the community in Warrenton that a First Night celebration scheduled for the last night of this year might have to be cancelled, but many individuals and businesses stepped up to deliver $12,000 in pledges to help the gathering happen. It’s the 20th First Night in Warrenton’s history. The Town of Leesburg wasn’t so fortunate this year, and had to cancel their New Year’s Eve celebration. The Occupy movement in Dover, Delaware helped rescue First Night Dover earlier this week, with grassroots efforts to draw support from musicians, craftsman, and othe...
  • Warrenton Christmas Parade 2011 (2011/12/3)
This morning, the Town of Warrenton started off the holidays with a parade on Main Street in Old Town . The streets were crowded with people, and there were more people marching than I anticipated. I got there a little early, before the crowds of people arrived. It was great seeing Willard Scott participating in the parade, and the community came out in full support as well, from boy scouts and girl scouts, marchers representing schools, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and churches in the area. The parade was filled with people dancing and playing musical instruments, including elementary students performing on recorders, and other pipers piping. There were marchers of all shapes and sizes and ages, some in cub scout or boy scout garb and brownie and girl scout uniforms, some in band...
  • Halloween Scarecrows in The Plains, Virginia (2011/10/23)
Fauquier County’s The Plains decided that since they were too small a town to have a Halloween parade, and that trick or treating really didn’t happen much there, they would do something else to have fun on a community wide basis. They came up with the idea of having a scarecrow contest instead. Since all the scarecrows were to be in place by October 20th, I went and checked them out yesterday, and took some pictures. I don’t know if I got photos of all of the scarecrows, but I think I managed to find most of them. This was a creative and fun way for the community to bond together, and it sounds like the town is planning on making this an annual event. Three winners will be selected in the categories, Scariest, Funniest, and Most Creative. The winners will be announced a...
  • Warrenton – Birthplace of the Powered Parachute Motorcycle (2011/10/13)
You never know what one of your neighbors might be up to in their sheds or basements, but could you imagine seeing a motorcycle flying through the skies over Warrenton that looked something like this: The image is from U.S. Patent 6,877,690, Combination powered parachute and motorcycle , which was originally filed with the US patent office on June 6, 2003, and granted on April 12, 2005. The abstract from the patent tells us about the invention: A combination powered parachute and motorcycle modifies an initially conventional motorcycle with the addition of various flight components to provide sustained flight for the machine. A peripheral and overhead safety structure is installed upon the motorcycle, with a second flight engine, propeller, folding propeller guard, and fuel system also in...
  • Unwrapping Warrenton’s New Lunch Spot – Great Harvest Bread (2011/10/5)
If you’ve stopped by Warrenton’s Great Harvest Bread , at 108 Main St., Warrenton, Virginia, in the past, you have an idea of the great smell of fresh baked bread that greets you at the door, or the happy crew that offers a friendly hello as you enter. Today, the bakery has become one of Warrenton’s best places to stop for lunch as well, introducing a number of sandwiches. I heard about this last Friday, and stopped by to check out what they offered. There’s a tradition in the computer world of introducing new software or gadgets known as “unboxing.” So, I decided to unbox one of the Warrenton Great Harvest Bread Sandwiches for you. Above is a picture of the bag my Roast Beef sandwich came in. I decided to enjoy my sandwich on my porch while taking pict...
  • Saturday Morning in Warrenton (2011/10/1)
I haven’t updated here in a while, though I do have some good news. The Fauquier Times Democrat is now including actual articles on their website these days. Also, a new site, Fauquier Now launched a week or so ago to provide news in the area as well. I took a number of pictures of Warrenton this morning, and decided to share some of them. The Farmer’s Market at the corner of 5th and Lee street in Old Town foes until November 19th, though the number of vendors participating seems to have dropped off a little now that it’s gotten chillier in the mornings. Here are some images from the Farmer’s Market: The booth above specialized in flowers, but there are also a number of booths carrying fresh local vegetables. You can also find local honey, homemade soaps, salsas, a...
  • Faster and More Affordable Internet Access in Fauquier County? (2011/3/31)
Fauquier County has an internet first to its credit. It’s the first county in Virginia to participate in a study on internet access in the State. And if you’re in Fauquier County, you can help. I remember my days of dial-up internet access all too well. Spending over an hour downloading the newest version of a browser, or waiting impatiently while the latest antivirus software updates made it onto my hard drive. Watching pages take minutes to fully resolve on my screen. It’s not an ideal situation if you run a home-based business and rely upon a website and email to interact with customers. High Speed internet access doesn’t just benefit people running businesses out of their dens or living rooms. Ecommerce online allows you to shop for goods and services that migh...
  • Clint Eastwood Invades Warrenton (2011/3/28)
The streets of Warrenton are closed off this morning for a visit from Clint Eastwood and his camera crew, for the filming of a scene on the courthouse steps in town. The movie being filmed is a biography of the life of J. Edgar Hoover, and the scene is the announcement that the kidnapper of the Lindbergh baby was found guilty. The town council approved the closing of the street for the scene a few weeks ago. I took a walk down Main Street a little after 7:00 am this morning to see what was going on with the filming. It looks like there are some areas where the public can watch the cameras rolling. I’ll probably return again to see if I can capture the brief scene that is supposed to take place on the courthouse steps, or maybe even just a glimpse of the director. According to the lo...
  • Warrenton Virginia Custom Search Added (2010/10/24)
I started researching Google’s Custom Search a few days ago, and thought it might be nice to add a custom search engine to this site. It’s sometimes difficult finding information about the town and Fauquier County using a general search engine. The search page is included in the main navigation on this site, and presently includes the following sites: Town of Warrenton – The Official Town of Warrenton, Virginia website Fauquier County – The Official Fauquier County website Fauquier Historical Society Visit Fauquier – From the Fauquier County Department of Economic Development WarrentonVirginia.org – This site The following pages are also included in the custom search engine: The Wikipedia page on Warrenton, Virginia Virginia.org on Warrenton – fro...
  • Warrenton Seven-Eleven Shuttered (2010/9/9)
A couple of weekends ago, a swirl-shaped graphic flashed on the TV and caught my attention with the words “Category 4 Hurricane.” Lots of home and business owners up and down the Atlantic Coast prepared for the worst with news of Hurricane Earl , which fortunately weakened and stayed mostly far enough away from the coast to spare many. Warrenton really isn’t that close to the coastline, but one of the Seven Elevens around town recently boarded up its windows and doors as if in anticipation of the storm: I’m not sure exactly when the boards appeared on the Seven Eleven in the Warrenton Plaza shopping center, but the doors and windows remain covered, and it looks like this branch of the largest chain store in the World (supposedly 38,000 locations) may have served it...
  • Warrenton – Birthplace of the Coffee Percolator (2010/9/8)
So much writing about the history of Warrenton seems to focus upon the town’s role in the Civil War, that often other important elements of the achievements of citizens of the region are overlooked. A couple of inventors from Warrenton came up with an invention that touches upon a very large percentage of people’s lives here in the United States- coffee drinkers. A visit to the Old Jail Museum in Warrenton provided a lot of hints to the history of the town that were worth investigating further, like a mention of Duval P. Goldsmith as the inventor of the Coffee-Pot. I searched through Google’s patent search to see if I could find more, and came up with a second, uncredited, inventor, as well as a picture of the invention:
  • Joe Jacoby Dealership to Become Warrenton Wawa? (2010/9/5)
As a football player in the 1980s, few offensive linemen were bigger than Washington Redskins Hog Joe Jacoby. In the early 80s, at 6’7″ and 300+ pounds, he was left out of the NFL draft for for being too big. And when he visited the Redskins to try out as a free agent, he was mistaken for a defensive player by the coaching staff because offensive linemen just didn’t come that big. But, as the Redskin’s website notes these days, Jacoby became The Heart of ‘The Hogs’ . He also helped make one Virginia Pizzeria more popular – see: What Pizza Did Joe Jacoby Really Eat? When Joe Jacoby officially retired from football in July of 1994, he went from stopping defensive players from reaching quarterbacks as a 4 time Pro Bowl player, to start offering used ...
  • Virginia News Page Added (2010/6/1)
I’ve been searching around trying to find a page or a site that provides news about Virginia, covering the whole state, and not having much luck. So, at the suggestion of Kimberly, my partner in publishing here, I took at look at the Google AJAX Feed API and collected a number of URLs to RSS feeds from newspapers and Radio Stations in Virginia. I’ll likely be updating the look and feel of our new Virginia News page in the coming days, but please try it out and let us know what you think. If you know of any Virginia news sites that provide RSS feeds that might be a good addition, please let us know. Thanks.
  • Mayor Fitch Wins (2010/5/5)
Warrenton Mayor George B. Fitch has secured the center chair at Town Council meetings for another four years. The Fauquier Times-Democrat reports that Mayor George B. Fitch received 879 votes, or 63 percent of the total cast, to win his fourth term in office as Warrenton’s Mayor. Challenger “Dink” Godfrey received 37 percent of the vote. In a comment made the night of the election, Mayor Fitch mentioned a plan to sell preservation tax credits to local businesses, including a local bank, to raise $270,000 to help jumpstart the Mosby Museum at Brentmoor. Good news for the Town of Warrenton. It would be nice to see the museum open sometime in the near future. With the Old Jail Museum at one end of Main Street, and Brentmoor at the other, Warrenton would provide visitors wit...

Federal District Judge Lynn N. KANSAS CITY, Mo., August 22, 2011 - The White House will not be sending a representative to the Veterans of Foreign Wars 112th National Convention in San Antonio, Texas, drawing harsh criticism and a rebuke from the leadership of the nation's largest combat veteran's organization. "The VFW has had a long-standing tradition of inviting the sitting president to address our convention. We want to know where he stands on veterans' affairs, and we want those remarks made in public and on the record," said Richard L. Eubank, the national commander of the nearly 2 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries. "When the President is unable to attend, it has always been customary for the White House to choose a high-level administration offic...
  • VFW letter: the debt deal's done, now what? (2011/8/2)
Dear VFW, Ladies Auxiliary and Supporters: The president this afternoon signed congressional legislation to raise the federal debt limit and reduce government spending. The larger question is now how this all impacts veterans, service members, their families and survivors. The measure passed by the Senate today and in the House yesterday will raise the $14.3 trillion debt limit by at least $2.1 trillion. An additional $500 billion could come in the fall, provided two-thirds of Congress approves. The final increase, expected early next year, would provide the Treasury enough borrowing power to pay its bills into 2013. The deal also calls for sharp cuts in agency spending --- about $917 billion over the next decade --- starting with a $25 billion reduction in fiscal year 2012, which begins O...

Attorney General’s opinion clarifies tax exemption for disabled veterans Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has issued an opinion clarifying interpretation of new legislation granting a real estate tax exemption to veterans with a 100 percent, permanent and total, service-connected disability. The legislation, enacted by the 2011General Assembly in response to a constitutional amendment passed by voters in 2010, exempts real estate, including property held jointly by a husband and wife, from taxation provided the veteran meets the specified disability requirements. The exemption applies to the building on the property and up to one acre of land. The veteran must use the property as his or her principal residence. The Attorney General’s opinion, issued July 15, 2011, clarifies the...

KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 1, 2011 - The national commander of America's largest and oldest major combat veterans' organization is appalled over allegations of religious censorship at one of the nation’s national cemeteries, calling it a case of “bureaucracy running amok.” “This is a point in case of bureaucracy…or rather, a classic example of a bureaucrat running amok. In spite of VA policy, the cemetery director is making up her own rules and has imposed hurtful, unilateral restrictions of her own choosing,” said Richard L. Eubank, the national commander of the 2.1 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries. Texas-based Liberty Institute has filed suit on behalf of the VFW, American Legion, and The National Memorial ...
